The Shawl Knitting Ministry

You are invited to join us for a peaceful and prayerful time together. We will work on "prayer shawls" to comfort or celebrate someone close to our heart. All are welcome to join us for music and chant, and short passages from Knitting Into the Mystery, by Susan Jorgensen and Susan Izzard.

Beginners as well as accomplished knitters are welcome. You will need #13 needles, and 3 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun in a color of your choice (available at Michael's Stores or www.lionbrand.com).

You are welcome to bring other knitting projects, or any other handwork. For more information, please call Betsy English at 855-9868 or email Betsy English. Check calendar for schedule.

Everything we do flows from our mission statement. We have tried very hard for the past five years to ensure that we are reaching out to all the women of our church to meet your needs. As a consequence, many of our ideas have come from you.

The WA was founded before WWII as a way for women in our congregation to have more say in the way our church was run. Back then, only men served on the boards. The women formed groups to sew and make crafts. They had a formal board and held meetings, luncheons and Bible study. They ran fund-raising events like the Darien Antiques Show and the Early Settlers Fair. We donated the money to local worthy causes and saved some in a “kitchen fund” to ensure that one day our church would get a new kitchen. Through the years of fund raising and the power of compound interest, our WA bank account grew enough that we could donate $20,000 to our kitchen renovation. The Early Settlers Fair eventually died in the 1990s as fewer people volunteered to work at it. But Pam Lindberg revived it by turning the event into our small-scale Dressings to Drumsticks Fair.

In the past five years, the WA has held nights at the ballet and opera in NYC, a night at the symphony in Stamford, Girls’ Nights Out at church and in homes, luncheons with various speakers and themes, book and movie discussions and continued our popular Dressings to Drumsticks Fair. A few activities have taken on lives of their own. These are Paddle Tennis at Weed Beach , Moms and Tots and the Shawl Knitting Ministry. Moms and Tots is a group of mothers and pre-school and pre-pre-school children who meet regularly in members’ homes. The kids play, and the mothers talk. They have also enjoyed parent dinners together. Karen Brennan leads this group. The Knitting Ministry meets regularly to share spirituality and to knit shawls for those in need. They follow the book “Knitting into the Mystery”. Betsy English leads the group. Pat Tyre runs the Weed Beach paddle tennis get-togethers on weekends.

Last year, we started an Aging in Place committee to help older members of our congregation stay in their homes as they age, if they so desire.
